When Children Create Art Intentionally

Most children, when provided with art materials and when encouraged to create, will create exuberantly. When children are provided with a simple prompt such as ‘If you could visit any planet, what might it be like?’ they allow their imagination to release hints about their inside world. Sometimes there are no words and creative expression unleashes metaphors and symbols that help them make sense of their world and share their narrative.
These visual narratives are a way to safely explore and release experiences and emotions and ask questions. Challenging life circumstances can be navigated, understood, and learned from the realms of creativity and imagination.

Art therapy can assist children with a number of issues including but not limited to:

  • Grief and loss: Death of a family member, friend or pet
  • Childhood trauma; physical, mental or sexual abuse
  • Learning disabilities and frustrations
  • Fears, anxiety and depression
  • Deal with the challenges of a serious disease or injury
  • Understand and navigate behavioural problems
  • Relieve stress and worry and increase coping
  • Increase awareness of self
  • Social ability
  • Self concept and worth

If your child is experiencing difficulties, art may be one way they can express themselves and cope with whatever is going on. The daily expression of art is a great mindfulness practise.

This Tuesday night you are invited to a hands on night exploring expressive arts as a way to support your child/ren through tough times. I will be sharing simple techniques that will help you support your child/ren and invite them to share their world with you in a new way.

Full details and bookings can be found on Facebook or you can contact me directly.

Private art therapy sessions for children are also available on Tuesdays.
